Principal’s Introduction

Newbie Knights and the Sustainability Team

This year I will be running the Sustainability program a little differently and hopefully a little more sustainably. The Sustainability Leaders Paige, Erika Aparna and Alam when she returns from overseas will help lead a committee consisting of 2-3 keen students from each year level 3, 4 and 5. I would love some parents/carers/grandparents to help out. If you are interested let me know. We will meet several times a term to determine which jobs the team will do, how we rotate the jobs and what innovative sustainability activities we will undertake. This year we will continue with Containers for Change, paper recycling, food scrap and worm farm, vegie patch, tree planting, waste wise and making bird boxes for around the school.

Last years’ tree planting was epic with over 150 trees and shrubs planted. Most were looking good until our hottest summer, Birak and Bunnaru, on record took its toll. (32 days over 35 Celsius, 12 of those over 40 Celsius). Some trees are going well and I’m thrilled to see two banksia flowers blooming in the Koorlangka Marlak Kadadjiny (Children Bush Learning) Nature Playground. We’ll probably just do a couple of bigger trees per class this year. Scarboro Toyota and the City of Stirling are keen to partner again.

The Sustainability Leaders and I will call for expressions of interest for years 3-5 Newbie Knights shortly.

City of Stirling Karrinyup Leisure Centre Car Park Modifications

Last week I met with officials from the City of Stirling who outlined modifications to the Karrinyup Leisure Centre Car Park aimed at improving safety and access for Centre patrons and the school. The changes are in response to concerns raised by Leisure Centre users and parents/carers using the car park as a pick up and drop off area for access to the school.

We are very fortunate to have such a facility next to the school and recognition by the City that the car park be dual use. This is a win-win scenario for all users. For major events Hazlitt Field will be opened for additional parking as we trialled last year. Let’s hope we can get back to whole school assemblies and concerts soon.

Key features of the new plan include

• A single entry point from Nerita Way and one exit point on Newborough Street
• Dedicated parking for Leisure Centre patrons, many of whom are elderly at the Centre
• Dual parking area for Centre users and school users
• A dedicated Kiss and Drop area for the school and new school access footpath
• New signage

The plan is now set and works will commence shortly. The City will try to minimise disruption to patrons of the Centre and the school during term and holiday breaks.

These modifications compliment the improvements made by having the new Staff Car Park

Website Going Live

Our new school website will be going live as of next Wednesday 16th March. It will still be ‘Under Construction’ as we remodel the look, content and presentation to be much more user friendly and make it easier to provide updated information. The host organisation is the same as the school newsletter.

Our target audience is primarily for parents and community visitors. The link to the new website will remain the same as the old one. www.newboroughps.wa.edu.au The new website has a much greater capacity to have video links, photos and should be a lot easier.

Useful School Information

SIREN TIMES

School commences at: 8.40am – Please arrive to your classroom by 8:30am
Morning recess: 10.40am – 11.00am
Lunch: 1.00pm – 1:40pm
School finishes at: 2:55pm (apart from Tuesday, early finish 2:30pm)

ATTENDANCE AND ABSENCES

Department of Education (Western Australia) policy states that all children from Pre Primary attend school for 5 full days as from the commencement of the school year.

Attendance details are entered electronically twice daily by classroom teachers and the information fed onto a school database. An SMS messaging service endorsed by the Department of Education operates to enable parents to inform the school by text message if their child is going to be absent. The system also automatically sends a message to parents if their child has not arrived at school and no notification has been received. This service assists parents to advise the school of absences and also ensures the safety of children by letting parents know that the child has not arrived at school.

If your child will be absent/sick or late, please contact the School directly either by:

Please include only the student’s name and classroom number, reason for absence and the date in any messages. For Example: “John Doe Room 13 absent 1/2/2021 sick with flu”.

Notes are requested from parents for:

• Any absence from school
• Permission to go on vacation during term time
• Permission to leave the school grounds at any time including lunch time
• Non participation in sport and physical education lessons

LATE ARRIVAL AT SCHOOL

Parents/guardians are reminded that students should not arrive at school before 8:20am. When gates open. Teachers open classrooms at 8:30am. There is no play before school.

School commences at 8:40am Sharp. Late arrivals need to go to the front office with their parents to sign in and get a LATE PASS.

SIGNING OUT EARLY

If your child needs to be collected from school during school hours (e.g. attending an appointment or leaving early), can you please email the school at newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au and your child’s class teacher ahead of time (the day before or in the morning would be great). Please include a reason for early pick up and the approximate time you will be here. This will help with coordinating your child to be waiting at the office when you arrive and lessen your wait time

EXCURSIONS AND INCURSIONS

During the year teaching staff plan a range of suitable excursions and incursions to introduce, develop or reinforce learning experiences for their class.

Incursions are an opportunity for the children to experience high standard performances covering a wide range of learning areas. The children are able to see national, and sometimes international, performers including musicians, storytellers, artists and many others at a reasonable cost. Particular attention is given to developing the social skills of the children, as well as their confidence and independence.

Formal written permission is required before any child can be taken on an excursion. Every endeavour is made to space excursions/incursions during the year to avoid costs being too great at any one time. If payment is not received by the due date and a payment plan has not been entered into, students will not participate in that particular excursion/incursion and will join a buddy class on that day.

MONEY COLLECTION

When paying for incursions, excursions or other school activities, please pay via direct deposit into the school bank. Newborough Primary School no longer accepts cash payments.

SCHOOL DIARIES AND LIBRARY BAGS

If your child still needs a school diary and/or green library bag from their booklist, these are no longer available for purchase through the P&C however they can be purchased from the front office.

Please make payment via direct deposit to the school’s bank account (diaries are $10 and the green library bags are $6.95), including the child’s name and the item in the reference section eg Janet Smith, diary/bag. Once the transaction appears on the next morning’s bank statement, we will deliver the item/s to your child in their classroom.

Special Group School Photos

The online ordering system is now ready to view and purchase the Special Group Photos (eg, Faction Captains, Science Captains, PBW Captains, Science Captains, Music Captains, Sustainability Leaders) recently taken. Please note that this website is DIFFERENT to the one parents order school portraits and class photos.

1. To place your Order online simply go to https://mspphotography.shootproof.com/
2. Locate the Schools Name, then select the album titled Newborough PS Specialist Groups – 2022
3. You will then be required to enter a password to view the Album. The password for this PLDHW22
4. Please ensure that you use your child’s name at the checkout
5. The images you are viewing are uncropped and will be cropped to fit to a 10x8 print (as per the first image in your gallery, a sample of layout & colour)

• The online orders will be open until midnight on Monday 14th of March 2022 – for the Bulk Pricing Offer
• The Bulk Pricing Offer is $20 per print and these will be delivered to the school BY CLASS GROUP
• After the $20 pricing expires, the photos will remain available online, but the photos are now at a cost of $35 per image and delivered to a preferred address.

Positive Behaviour

As part of Newborough Primary School’s commitment to being a child safe organisation, all classes complete a unit of work set by the Department of Education, called Protective Behaviours throughout the school year.

Protective Behaviours is an internationally acclaimed personal safety and child abuse prevention program endorsed by the Department of Education in Western Australia. The program is based on two key themes: "We all have the right to feel safe at all times" and "We can talk with someone about anything, no matter what it is"

The 10 Main Protective Behaviours Topic Areas Include:

1. Theme One "We all have the right to feel safe at all times" & Feelings
2. Early Warning Signs (the physical sensations we experience in our body when feeling unsafe or excited).
3. Safety Continuum (safe I fun to feel scared I risking on purpose I unsafe) & Problem Solving (How could someone feel safe even if...?).
4. Theme 2 "We can talk with someone about anything, no matter what it is" & Secrets.
5. Networks (Identifying adults that we can talk with and ask for help if we feel unsafe I scared I worried). 6. Persistence Expectation (Persisting in asking for help until you feel safe again).
6. Body Awareness and Ownership & Private and Public parts of the body (including teaching and using the correct anatomical names for private parts of the body), Private and Public clothing I Private and Public places I Private and Public behaviours.
7. Personal Space (social distance) & Safe and Unsafe Touch.
8. Assertiveness (body language/ tone of voice I NO GO TELL).
9. Theme and Program Reinforcement

Harmony Week

Developing Cultural Acceptance through Harmony Week- Everyone Belongs Week 8

Harmony Week runs from 15-21st March every year and it celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity. In schools we celebrate inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for all Australians, from the traditional owners of the land to those who have come from many countries around the world. The ongoing theme of Harmony Day is ‘everyone belongs’. Harmony Week is a week of cultural respect for all and an understanding how all Australians equally belong to this nation and enrich it.

As part of our Harmony Week activities this year in Week 8, Term 1, all classes will be reading ‘Little Nic’s Big Day Out’ by Nic Naitanui and illustrated by Fatima Anaya. The story book is a heart-warming celebration of all of the wonderful ways kids are truly themselves, celebrating their own diversity.

While teachers will be organising their own activities based around the themes in the book, the key teaching will be around the words DIVERSITY, RESPECT, EVERYONE BELONGS AND INCLUSIVENESS.

Friday 25 March – Year 1/2 Room 8 Assembly – Dress up day

While we are unsure if assemblies will be back to normal at the end of March, all students are still learning a community song to sing together at our own in-house assembly. The song will be ‘Sea of Flags’.

On Friday 25 March, we are also encouraging all staff and students to either wear ORANGE to represent the international colour of peace OR their national dress.

Edu-Dance Incursion Term 2 – Kindergarten to Year 6

This year, we have organised a fabulous, fun dance program called Edu-dance for Term 2 for all students Kindergarten to Year 6. The program teaches each class a dance over 9 weeks which they then perform at a concert at the end of the program. The concerts will be in Week 9, Term 2 (COVID-19 conditions apply at the time).

The program cost of the program is $41 per student and payment must be made in full before students can participate. The date for the last payment and Permission note to be returned is Friday 8th April (last day of this term). Permission notes went home last week. Please ask your class teacher for a new one or come to the office if you need another one.

MUSIC NEWS

Our students and staff enjoyed their first two community songs during our PA and Teams assemblies.

We are not sure yet what Massed Choir is going to look like this year, but I will set up senior choir students shortly with their app and website rehearsals.

POSITIONS VACANT

Karrinyup Primary School

Karrinyup Primary School is looking for cleaners to join our cleaning team. We have positions available Mon-Fri 9:30-2:30 during school terms, however, we are also looking for cleaners to join our casual pool for out of hours cleaning. Cleaners will be required to obtain Working With Children and Police clearances. Please contact karrinyup.ps@education.wa.edu.au or 9422 2050 with your availability if you are interested.

What a great turnout we had for the P&C Annual General Meeting last week! We are pleased to announce the new 2022 team:

Huge thanks also to all who have volunteered for sub-committees and other roles.

We are however sadly missing a Secretary (Carly Fowkes is standing in for term 1 and ready to hand over as soon as a volunteer reveals themselves!).

We have worked on reducing the roles and responsibilities for the Secretary going forward. It is predominantly an admin role so if you already spend a bit of time in front of the computer or are hoping to sharpen those computer skills back up after a bit of a break, then this could be the role for you! The role comes with a detailed handover and easy to follow list and calendar of tasks to complete throughout the year.

Tasks include: email notice of upcoming meetings; email distribution of agenda, reports, minutes; renewing memberships and insurance annually; maintaining P&C membership list; keeping parents updated via facebook/mailchimp as needed. Attendance at meetings to take minutes is helpful but not essential as this role could be delegated to another volunteer if needed. It really is a great way to get involved and give back to our school.

Easter Raffle

We will be having our very popular Easter Raffle again this year. Notes will be sent out requesting the donation of Easter goodies i.e., chocolate, Easter craft, mini games, Easter soft toys, Easter gift bags, baskets etc. The success of the raffle is dependent on your kind donation of Easter goodies, so please let’s get the donations rolling into the school. Notes enclosing Easter raffle tickets will be sent home shortly. We also have a need for large baskets for presenting the major classroom prizes. If you are a previous winner or just have a stash of large baskets that you don’t want, can you please return them to be re-used

Uniform Shop News

We have good news and bad news this week. The good news is that school hats are back in stock.

The bad news is that our supplier has just informed us that the yellow school polo shirts will unfortunately remain out of stock until April! They have been trying to source a new factory to supply the fabric (the previous factory closed due to the impact of Covid-19). As Perma-Pleat only works with Ethical Manufacturing companies, this has taken some time. They have now found a supplier and are expecting the fabric to arrive on the 25th March. Then shirts will then go for printing and be delivered to us. Again, yay! We apologise for all the inconvenience, we were first led to believe that they were on a shipping container somewhere, however that is not the case.

If you have any good quality uniforms at home i.e. minimal stains and current stock that your child has grown out of then please do bring them into the uniform shop. This will assist the families who are awaiting stock

If you have some spare time on Tuesday mornings we would welcome your help in the uniform shop Your valuable time is greatly appreciated

Uniform ordering can be made via QuickCliq (if you know the size). The cut off time is Mondays at 6pm to receive by Wednesday of the same week. Any orders after Monday at 6pm will be processed the following week.

Newbro Dads

The Newbro Dads is a social group for Newborough PS dads & father figures who encourage engagement with our kids and come together to share the fun.

Through social connection, we are creating experiences to improve our relationships with our kids so they can thrive.

Our social activities are kept simple to include everyone. Come down on a Friday for an early swim at the beach or just pop in for the post swim coffee.

Join us at a local watering hole for an arvo meal and drink, join the banter, listen to others, share your ideas and get involved if you want.

We organise a few small events for us and the kids each year and top it off with the Newbros Big School Camp Out. The Camp Out is so much fun and your kids will take home memories for life.

As with any community group, you can put in as little or as much time as you like. Race in after work, chip in with your special skill or jump in with both feet and help coordinate the activities.

To get things done we have a small group of Dads to steer the ship and the more hands helping the better.

Our next activity is the Friday morning swim at Trigg Beach. Meet at the beach access in front of Canteen by 6:15am, have a swim then catch up at Canteen after for a chat/ coffee/ hot choc if you like.
