Principal’s Introduction

School Board Vacancy

Are you looking for a way to be more engaged in your child’s school? Are you looking to make a positive contribution to the direction of school? We are seeking nominations from parents/legal guardians to join the School Board in the role of Parent Representative. The position will backfill for a one-year period ending at the end of 2022 replacing a Board Member who has unfortunately resigned due to increased work commitments.

You’ll join a team including other parent representatives along with the Principal, and staff and community representatives that provides advice to assist the School to identify, plan and resource its strategic objectives.

You do not need any prior experience of working on a Board. We encourage diverse membership that is representative of our varied school community. New members of the Board will be offered training and support. You can find detailed information about the School Board on our school website TBA

If you are interested please email or supply in writing your expression of interest to John.Worthy@education.wa.edu.au by 3:00pm, Wednesday 30th March 2022. If there are more nominees than positions available then candidates will be asked to provide a 250-word brief about themselves and what they can bring to the Board. All parents/legal guardians in the school will then have the opportunity to vote for their preferred candidate.

For further information please contact John Worthy (Principal) email John.Worthy@education.wa.edu.au , phone 9278 0450 or Callan Rose (Board Chair) on 0410 490 482, email callan.rose@uwa.edu.au

ANZAC Service 2022

Like many events so far this year we have had to modify the way we do things because of COVID-19 health protocols. This year we will still have our ANZAC Service. It will be an online service available to classes, students, parents and community members wherever located. A link will be sent out so everyone can join in and participate. It is likely we will have students and families in isolation so this will be a great way to be involved.

This year our theme is ‘Animals in War’. As we remember our service personnel we also will learn about the contribution animals have made and unfortunately for many their sacrifice in conflicts. Classes will learn about these animals, particularly those supporting Australia and New Zealand service personnel, in class through videos and online material prior to the Service.

The ANZAC Service itself will be hosted at the flagpoles as usual without a gathered audience. Our guest speaker this year is our Local Member for Scarborough, Stuart Aubrey, who will tell the story of the only horse, named Sandy, out of 136,000 to return after World War 1. Mrs Snelson will lead a small group of choir members in a song titled ‘Only Remembered – Warhorse’.

Two students from each class will join the Service to present a Banksia flower, our school logo, to be placed on one big wreath. This wreath will later be taken to the North Beach RSL for their Service at the memorial in North Beach. The class representative students will also read out a message written by their class to different serving animals and their handlers that will be placed in a small canister and attached to a pigeon. To conclude our Service, all classes will come out onto the verandah to watch as the pigeons are sent off to take their message to a secret location on the other side of Perth. This should be quite spectacular and memorable as the pigeons take off in mass. From this secret location the messages will be read and an email reply sent back to classes. Mr Dick Barnes, a former teacher, from the United Districts Racing Pigeon Club is coordinating the pigeons and training them up.

We hope you can join the ANZAC Service from wherever you might be on Friday 8th April commencing at 8:50am.

This initial works is scheduled for completion prior to the return of students for term two. There will be some disruption during the works period with vehicle movement and parking.

Team Work

With two of our cleaners unwell and recovering from COVID students and staff stood up and worked together to keep our school clean and hygienic. An extra special effort to keep floors and surfaces rubbish and dirt free.

ATTENDANCE AND ABSENCES

Department of Education (Western Australia) policy states that all children from Pre Primary attend school for 5 full days as from the commencement of the school year.

Attendance details are entered electronically twice daily by classroom teachers and the information fed onto a school database. An SMS messaging service endorsed by the Department of Education operates to enable parents to inform the school by text message if their child is going to be absent. The system also automatically sends a message to parents if their child has not arrived at school and no notification has been received. This service assists parents to advise the school of absences and also ensures the safety of children by letting parents know that the child has not arrived at school.

School commences at 8:40am Sharp. Late arrivals need to go to the front office with their parents to sign in and get a LATE PASS.

SIGNING OUT EARLY

If your child needs to be collected from school during school hours (e.g. attending an appointment or leaving early), can you please email the school at newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au and your child’s class teacher ahead of time (the day before or in the morning would be great). Please include a reason for early pick up and the approximate time you will be here. This will help with coordinating your child to be waiting at the office when you arrive and lessen your wait time.

EXCURSIONS AND INCURSIONS

During the year teaching staff plan a range of suitable excursions and incursions to introduce, develop or reinforce learning experiences for their class.

Incursions are an opportunity for the children to experience high standard performances covering a wide range of learning areas. The children are able to see national, and sometimes international, performers including musicians, storytellers, artists and many others at a reasonable cost. Particular attention is given to developing the social skills of the children, as well as their confidence and independence.

Formal written permission is required before any child can be taken on an excursion. Every endeavour is made to space excursions/incursions during the year to avoid costs being too great at any one time. If payment is not received by the due date and a payment plan has not been entered into, students will not participate in that particular excursion/incursion and will join a buddy class on that day.

MONEY COLLECTION

When paying for incursions, excursions or other school activities, please pay via direct deposit into the school bank. Newborough Primary School no longer accepts cash payments.

Money can be paid by online banking (please include your child’s surname and incursion/excursion name as reference). Our school bank details are:

Science News

Chemistry has been our first Science strand for 2022. There has been a lot of messy fun, which means a lot of preparation and clean up! I would like to publicly thank my two, fabulous Science Captains, Erika Doggett and George Manthopoulos, who give up their lunch time every Monday to help me with these big jobs!

Here are Erika and George drawing up and cutting strips for a Year 4/5 ‘Snap, Tear, Stretch’ investigation, where students will test the tensile strength of materials by taping them to clothes washing pegs and quickly opening them.

Thank you so much Erika and George, you have been a terrific support so far this year and I really appreciate your help.
