Principal’s Introduction

COVID Update

We are experiencing higher rates of positive COVID cases with students and staff at the moment. In just the first three weeks and two days of this term we have equalled the number of positive cases for all of term one. Students (42) Staff (8). We have also had quite a few students absent with common colds and the regular flu. At times it is hard to distinguish between these and COVID so I advise everyone to use the RAT kits. If you run out let me know or come into school and pick up some more. Clearly the rule changes for mask wearing, close contacts and isolation has accelerated the transmission of this nasty virus. Thank you again to parents for your vigilance keeping unwell children home, testing, reporting positive student cases ( Newborough.PS@education.wa.edu.au ) and following WA Health advice.

Please continue to:

  • Monitor your child(rens) health. Keep home until asymptomatic.
  • Report any COVID positive cases to WA Health and follow their advice
  • Advise the school of any absences, including COVID either Newborough.PS@education.wa.edu.au or Newborough.PS.Absentee@education.wa.edu.au It is appreciated if you can cc your child’s teacher into the email.
  • Follow WA Health mandates for adults (Secondary students upwards) who have been contacts with COVID cases and mask wearing.

All schools are struggling with backfilling absent staff at the moment. If we are unable to backfill or provide internal coverage we may need to collapse classes at some point.

Vegie Patch Rebuild

Last Saturday Andrew McGuckin and the Newbros (Dad’s and Father Figures Team) held a very successful Busy Bee removing some of the old vegie patch gardens and replacing them with new timber borders and soil. It was great to see so many Dad’s and Mums with plenty of help from children.

This area will soon be ready for our first winter plantings.

Assembly Parking

Next week, week 5 Friday 27th May we will have our first parent’s assembly for the year. The assembly will be hosted by the Year One Classes Rooms 9 and 10.

There will be additional parking available on Hazlitt Field. Entry to this parking is through our school service entry on Wilding Street.

Parking at the City of Stirling’s Karrinyup Sports Centre will be limited so that patrons attending the centre have priority access. Most of them are Senior Citizens.

Newbie Knights Sustainability Team

Our 2022 Newbie Knights met for the first time as a Sustainability Team last Friday. This year we have a team of selected Sustainability Champions who will meet regularly to determine what Sustainability Activities we are going to tackle and who is going to lead the way. There are three students from year each of Years 3, 4 and 5 plus the four Year Six Sustainability Leaders who comprise the Newbie Knights Committee. At our first meeting, led by Mr Worthy, the Knights received their badges and their contract. We also identified areas we wanted to do this year including vegetable patch, Containers for Change, recycling paper, plastics and batteries, the worm farm (recycling some food scraps), building bird nesting boxes, tree planting and making healthy pizzas with some vegies from our Kitchen Gardens. The Newbie Knights are working out the timing, who is doing which jobs and how we can engage students and the Newborough School Community in our activities. It’s a lot of fun and some great learning.

Rhythmic Gymnastics Champ

Congratulations to Taya Fedorova, Year Six Room 16, who was a member of the WA Rhythmic Gymnastics WA State team that recently won a bronze medal at the Australian Championships on the Gold Coast. This is a great achievement for the team as they have not been able to train or travel as much as they would have liked in preparation for the carnival. Well done Taya, like your parents we are very proud of your efforts and achievements.

“Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you.”

Attendance details are entered electronically twice daily by classroom teachers and the information fed onto a school database. An SMS messaging service endorsed by the Department of Education operates to enable parents to inform the school by text message if their child is going to be absent. The system also automatically sends a message to parents if their child has not arrived at school and no notification has been received. This service assists parents to advise the school of absences and also ensures the safety of children by letting parents know that the child has not arrived at school.

Please include a reason for early pick up and the approximate time you will be here. This will help with coordinating your child to be waiting at the office when you arrive and lessen your wait time

EXCURSIONS AND INCURSIONS

During the year teaching staff plan a range of suitable excursions and incursions to introduce, develop or reinforce learning experiences for their class.

Incursions are an opportunity for the children to experience high standard performances covering a wide range of learning areas. The children are able to see national, and sometimes international, performers including musicians, storytellers, artists and many others at a reasonable cost. Particular attention is given to developing the social skills of the children, as well as their confidence and independence.

Formal written permission is required before any child can be taken on an excursion. Every endeavour is made to space excursions/incursions during the year to avoid costs being too great at any one time. If payment is not received by the due date and a payment plan has not been entered into, students will not participate in that particular excursion/incursion and will join a buddy class on that day.

MONEY COLLECTION

When paying for incursions, excursions or other school activities, please pay via direct deposit into the school bank. Newborough Primary School does not accept cash payments.

Money can be paid by online banking (please include your child’s surname and incursion/excursion name as reference). eg K Smith Edu-dance. Our school bank details are:

Busy Bee Success!!

We had a great turn out on Saturday to kick off our Vegie Garden Reno. Huge amounts of team work achieved an awesome result, with our new garden bed posts cemented in ready for the timber sleepers to be installed. We fully completed one bed ready for planting.

Thanks to everyone who helped out organising materials and deliveries.

Special thanks to:

  • The volunteers and kids who worked hard in the garden,
  • The P & C for supplying the snags, buns and sauce,
  • Bunnings Innaloo for discounts on materials and donating some timber sleepers,
  • Bakers Delight Karrinyup for supplying the bread rolls at a discount, and
  • Soils Aint Soils in Balcatta for a great deal on the new soil.

There were big smiles, dirty hands, wheel barrow rides and buckets of community spirit, making it a fun day. The kids were a great help, they did heaps of shovelling, raking and even held a hose!!! We had a few of the newly announced Newbie Knights there with us, who will be involved in planting the garden beds soon.

Thanks again from the Newbro Dads!
