Principal’s Introduction

Welcome Back Term 3

It was lovely to see staff return ready for another great term at Newborough for our School Development on Monday 18 July. We were all very appreciative of the wonderful morning tea provided by members of the P&C saying thank you to all the staff for their extra efforts made during our difficult year so far. What a great way to start.

We have several new families joining the school this term and four Notre Dame School Experience teachers completing their final practice. Welcome Mrs Isabelle Roberts (Year 5, Miss Kos and Mrs Hughes), Miss Rebeka Jepson (Year 6, Miss Phillips), Mr Andrew Ryan (Years 2/3, Ms Murray) and Mr Thomas Scoulidis (Years 5/6, Miss Danker). There is a rumour that we have also picked up a couple of fairies who seem to like our school and are looking for fairy houses to live in.

Term Three is promising to be very busy and exciting. Here is just a sample of what to look forward to. Interschool Cross Country, P&C Welcome Coffee van, Running Club, Bird Nesting Boxes (Years 3-6), Fairy Houses (K-2), Athletics carnivals, National Tree Planting Day, Science Week and Science Dress Up Day, Book Week, School Disco, Constable Care (Pre-primary), the WA Massed Choir Festival and of course our regular class assemblies.

Have a fantastic term everyone!

COVID Update

We continue to have students, staff and families impacted by COVID and other illnesses. Unfortunately, five staff were impacted by COVID during the holidays and a number of students. Hopefully as we move towards the warmer weather we start to get less of the winter colds and flus. Please continue to email me, John.Worthy@education.wa.edu.au if your child(ren) have COVID as I record cases for Health records and to keep an eye on our school situation. The State Government is encouraging the wearing of masks and as always safe health practises.

School Survey

Shortly every family, staff member and student in years five and six will be sent a link to complete the School Survey. School Surveys are conducted every two years as part of the agreement between State and Federal Governments for school funding. This short survey provides feedback to the school on how we are going in a range of important areas. The survey period is only one week so I encourage all who receive the survey to complete it as soon as possible. The survey closes on Wednesday 3rd August.

Containers for Change

So far our school has saved 8303 containers from landfill and made $830.30 for Sustainability programs in the school since we joined the program in 2020. The Containers for Change team has issued the school with a new scanning code that can be used to at any depot and have the funds directed to the Sustainability budget at the school.

WA Education Awards

The WA Education Awards celebrate the teaching and learning excellence that delivers positive outcomes for students every day.

This year, 3 award categories will honour outstanding schools and teams that demonstrate:

  1. collective leadership,
  2. innovation and
  3. community spirit – helping students to grow and achieve their best.

Nominate for the opportunity to recognise whole-school efforts, support your entire school community, and win $10,000 for your school’s projects and programs.

Nominations are now open, closing 5:00 pm, Monday 15 August 2022.

Send your school Award Applause

Is your school incredible? Do you think they should win the WA Education Awards 2022? There are so many stories of local public school excellence just waiting to be shared. Send your school a message of support to inspire them to nominate.

Eligible nominators

Public school staff (including principals), school board chairs (Mr Callan Rose) and P&C presidents (Mr Laurie McCullum) can nominate their school for an award. Senior central services staff can also submit a nomination for a school.

The school principal, leadership team, staff and broader school community should be informed and supportive of a nomination. The best nominations are a team effort. The principal must endorse the nomination before it is submitted.

Parents, students and other community members can't submit a nomination. Talk to your school and encourage them to nominate.

Eligible nominees

All Western Australian public schools are eligible to be nominated for an award.

Schools can be nominated in both the Excellence in School Leadership Award and an Excellence in Teaching and Learning award, but only once in each category. For Excellence in Teaching and Learning awards, schools with both primary and secondary-aged students should choose either primary or secondary category which best suits the context of their school and nomination.

Previous whole-school winners, finalists and nominees of the WA Education Awards are eligible for nomination. Individuals are not eligible to be nominated.

For information on each award and how to nominate go to: WA Education Awards - Department of Education

Coffee Van and Welcome to New Families Meet and Greet – Friday 5th August 2022

Covid has derailed many plans NPS and the P&C have had to welcome new families to Newborough Primary School this year. We had intended to hold a morning tea in Term 1 for all new families to the school, but this did not go ahead due to Covid restrictions. As a joint initiative of both NPS and the NPS P&C, we will be inviting all new families to a Meet and Greet in the Kindy Room 1 playground at 8.40-9.40am on Friday 5th August. This location means any small children can play in the kindy playground safely while families mingle with other families.

A coffee van has been organised by the P&C (Thanks, Bec) for all staff and parents, and our new families, to purchase their morning caffeine rush from 8am that morning. The coffee van, Lady Latte, will be located near the school in the Karrinyup Sports Hall car park.

More information will be sent to our new families with details of our Meet and Greet. We look forward to meeting with new families to see how you are going, albeit 6 months later for some of them!

National Science Week – Week 5 Term 3; 14-19th August

We will be celebrating Science Week during Week 5 of Term 3.

The Science room will be open to visitors during your child’s regular Science lesson time. Please see timetable below.

The National Science Week theme for 2022 is: ‘Glass – More than meets the eye’. Each class will be doing a fun science learning activity based on this theme, and we would love you to be involved. If you are going to attend your child’s science class, please come through the Mulberry Tree gate and sign in on the register in the Science room.

Our special week will also include a ‘Science Dress Up Day’ on Wednesday, 17th of August, so put your Science thinking caps on, and get creative with your dress up ideas!

GIFTED AND TALENTED: Primary Extension and Challenge (PEAC)

ASSESSMENT OF YEAR 4 STUDENTS FOR THE PEAC PROGRAM

The PEAC Program provides part time extension and enrichment for exceptionally able students in Years 5 and 6. PEAC offers a range of courses that provide identified students with work that is intellectually challenging.

All students in Year 4 will have the opportunity to be assessed for suitability for the PEAC Program. Testing at Newborough Primary will occur on Monday, 1st August 2022

The scores from the test will be used in the selection of students for PEAC courses and extension programs during 2023 to 2024 and also to inform educational provision in schools.

Parent/Carers Pick Up and Drop Off Changes

Now that COVID restrictions have lifted we are changing the process to allow Parents/Carers to drop off library bags, hats, lunchboxes etc. to classrooms/students/bags. Parents/Carers sign in at the front office on Passtab (will be given a Visitor sticker to wear), drop the item off to their child’s class, and then sign out from Passtab at the front office.

Parents/Carers continue to advise teachers and the front office via email for pick up for appointments etc. so children can be made ready and on time. Parents/Carers sign the child out at the front office, will be given a ‘Sign Out’ card (to hand to the classroom or specialist teacher so they know the student has been signed out), and then go to the classroom to pick up their child.

The new process will commence at the start of term three. This process will reduce the need for staff to bring children to the office for collection. It will also reduce the number of children waiting in the office corridor.

MARIMBA ENSEMBLE

Our year 5 and 6 Marimba Ensemble will be competing in the Virtual International Marimba and Steelpan Festival. This festival is hosted by Education Africa and promises to be a very unique and interesting experience for our Marimba Ensemble. Good luck to our 8 students in the Marimba Ensemble!

ATTENDANCE

This year has been quite disruptive for students, with the effects of Covid-19 being evidence in our attendance figures. Thank you to parents who have followed the State Government’s protocols and kept children home while sick and informing us of your child’s absences. Newborough usually maintains an overall attendance rate of about 93% and the percentage of students attending regularly falls between 75% and 80%. From the table below, you can see the breakdown of attendance for this Semester, which has dropped considerably.

Whilst we appreciate your work with the disruptions that Covid-19 has caused, we encourage your child to be at school every day. Attached is information from the Department of Education regarding when it is ok to miss school.

If you child is missing school we ask that you notify school using one of the following methods:

ATTENDANCE AND ABSENCES

Department of Education (Western Australia) policy states that all children from Pre Primary attend school for 5 full days as from the commencement of the school year.

Attendance details are entered electronically twice daily by classroom teachers and the information fed onto a school database. An SMS messaging service endorsed by the Department of Education operates to enable parents to inform the school by text message if their child is going to be absent. The system also automatically sends a message to parents if their child has not arrived at school and no notification has been received. This service assists parents to advise the school of absences and also ensures the safety of children by letting parents know that the child has not arrived at school.

SIGNING OUT EARLY

If your child needs to be collected from school during school hours (e.g. attending an appointment or leaving early), can you please email the school at newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au and your child’s class teacher ahead of time - at least 24 hours beforehand, where possible. Please include a reason for early pick up and the approximate time you will be here. This will help with coordinating your child to be waiting at the office when you arrive and lessen your wait time

EXCURSIONS AND INCURSIONS

During the year teaching staff plan a range of suitable excursions and incursions to introduce, develop or reinforce learning experiences for their class.

Incursions are an opportunity for the children to experience high standard performances covering a wide range of learning areas. The children are able to see national, and sometimes international, performers including musicians, storytellers, artists and many others at a reasonable cost. Particular attention is given to developing the social skills of the children, as well as their confidence and independence.

Formal written permission is required before any child can be taken on an excursion. Every endeavour is made to space excursions/incursions during the year to avoid costs being too great at any one time. If payment is not received by the due date and a payment plan has not been entered into, students will not participate in that particular excursion/incursion and will join a buddy class on that day.

MONEY COLLECTION

When paying for incursions, excursions, or other school activities, please pay via direct deposit into the school bank. Newborough Primary School does not accept cash payments.

Money can be paid by online banking (please include your child’s surname and incursion/excursion name as reference). eg K Smith Edu-dance. Our school bank details are:

Once the transaction appears on the next morning’s bank statement, we will deliver the item/s to your child in their classroom.

Uniform Shop News

We are pleased to announce that the yellow polo shirts are now back in stock in all sizes. We have lots of stock of warm trackies and jackets to keep kids warm through chilly August, you might also want to think about getting your faction shirts ready for the faction carnival later this term! Please place orders via Quickcliq for delivery to your child's classroom.

Second Hand Stock and Store Opening Times

The P&C have been working hard to sort through all our second hand stock to ensure that we are offering value and quality to our families. The benefits of donating out-grown uniforms is two-fold; it supports other Newborough families by providing a less expensive uniform option and is also a valuable source of fundraising for our school. If you have great quality uniform items you would like to donate for this purpose we would be very appreciative. However, there are a few criteria that items need to meet in order for us to accept them:

  1. Items must be current uniform stock with the banksia logo
  2. Items must have been originally purchased through our uniform shop i.e. not generic shorts and track pants from other retailers
  3. Items must be functional and in good condition ie minimal stains/fading, working zips, stretchy elastic in waistband
  4. Please do not donate items that you would no longer dress your own child in!

Please note we are unable to accept and on-sell items that were not originally purchased from us. Items such as track pants and shorts purchased elsewhere can be donated to other second hand shops or passed on directly to other parents at school.

The Uniform Shop will again be re-opening for parents to access second hand items and check sizes/purchase new items. The shop will be opening on Tuesday mornings between 8:10am-8:50am. Payment will be by eftpos only with a $0.50 processing fee. If you have items to donate they can be left at the shop at this time.

The uniform shop is staffed by volunteers who despite also working, give up their free time to assist the P&C and our school. Naturally errors are sometimes made, issues with supply of stock are often out of our control, there may be a line and a need to wait. Anything besides appreciation and gratitude towards our vollies will not be tolerated. We hope to see you in the shop soon!

All uniform orders can be made online via Quickcliq and will be delivered to your child’s classroom.

PAST STUDENT UPDATE

I’m delighted to let you know two former Newborough netball students, Lila P and Nina R made it through to the final selection round for the Under 12s Western Australian State Netball Team – with Lila earning a spot in the final 12. This is an absolutely amazing achievement when you consider they beat over 300 other budding netballers from across the State to make selection. Lila will travel to Woollongong, NSW this September to compete in the National Championships. We wish her, and her team, every success!

Thanks ladies
Sonia
