Principal’s Introduction

Holiday Arrangements

On behalf of all the staff I wish everyone a very safe and enjoyable break. Hopefully the weather is good, and everyone can enjoy some fun and recovery time for those who have been ill. Don’t forget the Perth Royal Show. I’ll be going.

This has been another busy term culminating with two fantastic events that really shows the uniqueness of Newborough PS. Firstly the teamwork efforts of our Interschool Athletics team who battled hard on the Jumps, Throws and Distance Day. Unfortunately, the main carnival could not go ahead due to the weather. Whilst we didn’t win the points our team did very well and performed with distinction with spirit and sportsmanship. Mrs Henrick and Mr Stenhouse were so proud of everyone in the team who gave their whole efforts performing brilliantly on the first day. It was lovely to hear that our school values shone through with terrific sportsmanship and team spirit. Thank you to all the staff and parents who assisted on the days and parents and friends who cheered so loudly and long.

The next big highlight was the wonderful Year 6 Enterprise Fete with students planning, organising and managing and using interpersonal skills through a broad range of really interesting stalls spaced all around the quadrangle. There was a lot of excitement from Kindy upwards as students visited stalls, played games and activities and helped raise funds for our graduating students. This year the fete raised $2100. Well done Miss Phillips, Miss Jepson, Mr Scoulidis and Miss Danker who is now enjoying her LSL.

I am looking forward to the Choir performing this Friday evening at the WA Massed Choir concert at the Perth Concert Hall. The rehearsal for this event will be held on Wednesday 21st September due to the Queen’s National Day of Mourning.

Students will have received a flyer promoting the Colour Run Event on Saturday the 22nd October. Mark this in your calendar. It will be lots of fun and this year there will be slime as well.

As you will be aware, the Prime Minister has announced a public holiday as a national day of mourning for the late Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday 22 September.

This means that Newborough PS will be closed on this day.

It is important to note that the school term officially ends on Friday 23rd September and students are expected to attend school on this day. All previous arrangements for the 23rd remain in place and it will be “business as usual.”

I appreciate that this may cause some inconvenience but given the circumstances I appreciate your understanding.

The school office re-opens for staff on Monday 10th October. All staff will be participating in a range of School Development activities including Digital Technologies, Positive Behaviour, Critical and Creative Thinking, preparing for term 4 and some classroom preparation time.

Students Return on Tuesday 12th October.

Student at NPS for 2023

If your child (ren) will not be attending Newborough PS next year could you, please let us know in the office as soon as possible. This will assist us with planning for 2023.

Uniform Shop Update

Shortly the school will be moving to an online Uniform Shop run by an external provider. With the assistance of the P&C the school has undertaken an exhaustive process to identify a supplier that we believe will service uniform needs for students and staff. We looked for reliability, quality of uniforms, affordable prices and accessibility for families. The company is Jenny Franklin Enterprises known as JFE. They are based in Guthrie Street Osborne Park with their drop in shop and workshops. Once the school has concluded the contract process, we can begin using the service. The P&C will continue to run the Second-Hand Uniform Shop that is currently on the move to the storeroom next to Room 17. (Up the ramp behind the Canteen)

Library Books During the Holidays

Students will now be able to take home Library books for term break holidays. The Library will not close for stocktake prior to the end of each term. The school has an updated computer system that manages the borrowing of books and resources that makes management so much more efficient and effective. ‘Reading is Brainfood.”

WasteSorted Schools Accreditation

Newborough Primary School has successfully met the requirements to become an Accredited WasteSorted School for 2022. This acknowledges our waste management processes including rubbish management and recycling and re-using endeavours. We are eligible to apply for several grants with this accreditation.

“I have in sincerity pledged myself to your service, as so many of you are pledged to mine. Throughout all my life and with all my heart I shall strive to be worthy of your trust.”

Term 4: In-term Swimming: Scarborough Beach Pool: Weeks 1 and 2

The In-term Swimming lessons for Newborough Primary School are in Weeks One and Two, Term Four (Wednesday 12th October to Friday 21st October 2022). Excursion Advice Forms have been sent home with the end date for payment on Wednesday 21st September 2022. The cost of In-term swimming is $38 per child. Payment is due by Wednesday 21st September 2022.

The In-term swimming program is ONLY eight days long. To be of benefit, students must participate in all eight days. It is essential that payment is made this term. Please do not hesitate to make a payment plan for this with Mrs Sharon Singleton if needed. Thank you.

Parent/Carers Pick Up and Drop Off Changes

Now that COVID restrictions have lifted we are changing the process to allow Parents/Carers to drop off library bags, hats, lunchboxes etc. to classrooms/students/bags. Parents/Carers sign in at the front office on Passtab (will be given a Visitor sticker to wear), drop the item off to their child’s class, and then sign out from Passtab at the front office.

Parents/Carers continue to advise teachers and the front office via email for pick up for appointments etc. so children can be made ready and on time. Parents/Carers sign the child out at the front office, will be given a ‘Sign Out’ card (to hand to the classroom or specialist teacher so they know the student has been signed out), and then go to the classroom to pick up their child.

The new process will commence at the start of term three. This process will reduce the need for staff to bring children to the office for collection. It will also reduce the number of children waiting in the office corridor.

Kindy Café Thank You

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all families for your support of another highly successful Kindy Café. We really appreciate all of the contributions made by our Kindy families and the support of the school community in making this such a great success.

This year we have raised nearly $500, which is an outstanding achievement.

Special thanks to the Morgan family for the generous loan of their shade shelter and to our tireless ‘band of helpers’ who worked hard to make it such a success.

The funds raised at the Kindy Café has helped to pay for our wonderful mud kitchen.

Many thanks,

The Kindy Team

ATTENDANCE AND ABSENCES

Department of Education (Western Australia) policy states that all children from Pre Primary attend school for 5 full days as from the commencement of the school year.

Attendance details are entered electronically twice daily by classroom teachers and the information fed onto a school database. An SMS messaging service endorsed by the Department of Education operates to enable parents to inform the school by text message if their child is going to be absent. The system also automatically sends a message to parents if their child has not arrived at school and no notification has been received. This service assists parents to advise the school of absences and also ensures the safety of children by letting parents know that the child has not arrived at school.

If your child will be absent/sick or late, please contact the School directly either by:

SIGNING OUT EARLY

If your child needs to be collected from school during school hours (e.g. attending an appointment or leaving early), can you please email the school at newborough.ps.absentee@education.wa.edu.au and your child’s class teacher ahead of time - at least 24 hours beforehand, where possible. Please include a reason for early pick up and the approximate time you will be here. This will help with coordinating your child to be waiting at the office when you arrive and lessen your wait time.

EXCURSIONS AND INCURSIONS

During the year teaching staff plan a range of suitable excursions and incursions to introduce, develop or reinforce learning experiences for their class.

Incursions are an opportunity for the children to experience high standard performances covering a wide range of learning areas. The children are able to see national, and sometimes international, performers including musicians, storytellers, artists and many others at a reasonable cost. Particular attention is given to developing the social skills of the children, as well as their confidence and independence.

Formal written permission is required before any child can be taken on an excursion. Every endeavour is made to space excursions/incursions during the year to avoid costs being too great at any one time. If payment is not received by the due date and a payment plan has not been entered into, students will not participate in that particular excursion/incursion and will join a buddy class on that day.

MONEY COLLECTION

When paying for incursions, excursions, or other school activities, please pay via direct deposit into the school bank. Newborough Primary School does not accept cash payments.

Booklists 2023 and Beyond

As many of you may know, Newborough Primary School organises students’ booklist/stationery requirements through the Newborough P&C. This is a major fundraiser for the P&C, providing valuable resources to the school.

This will be my last year managing the Booklist process and I am looking for someone to succeed me, shadowing me this year and taking over the following year.

Processing of orders occurs towards the end of Term 4, with packing and distribution occurring in the two weeks before school starts. If you have that time available and are interested, let me know.

All training will be provided!
