Principal’s Introduction

Goodbyes and Best Wishes

I would like to take this final opportunity for the year to thank parents, students, community members and staff for your sterling efforts over this year. It certainly has been an interesting year commencing with the fantastic ‘Wild on Wilding’ City of Stirling event at Jackson-Wilding Park. We then were impacted by COVID with class closures and home schooling for some. Once we recovered from this we were able to return to a much more normal program.

There are so many people to thank I would like to single out several who have been absolutely wonderful. Karen Tucknott, Nick Stenhouse, Sharon Singleton, Laura D’Alonzo-Barkley, Meagan MacKenzie and Wendy Clouston who are fantastic people to work with and do a great job around the Administration area. All the teachers and staff have been fantastic. Aren’t we fortunate to have such a wonderful team of teachers and great support crew backing them up. I cannot speak more highly of this brilliant staff group.

A big thank you to Laurie Mccallum and all the P&C team who work so tirelessly for our school running all the many activities that support our children and the school. The P&C ran a most successful Easter Raffle and Colour Run as well as the Canteen, Uniform Shop, Bookclub and Booklist right at the start of the year.

Sincere thanks to Callan Rose who has led our School Board for a third year. This year we were able to undertake training welcoming new Parent member Renae Hughes who replaced Jason Davies. I am pleased to announce that Denise Sanders has been re-elected to the Board along with Corinne Roberts. The Board ensures the school keeps focus on the Business Plan and supports the governance of the school.

We sadly say goodbye to several staff who are leaving us at the end of the year. Teachers, Thomas Scoulidis, Michele Henrick, Education Assistants Isabelle Roberts, Chantelle Neal, Lynne Caira and School Psych Dylan Roggio. We will miss them all and wish them all the best in the future.

All the class structures, classroom allocations and student placements have concluded and are under lock and key till we announce these on Booklist Day – Monday 30th January next year. Classes are not announced any earlier given that late changes are possible.

For all those students, staff and families who are not with us next year please take our very best wishes and appreciation for your contributions to the school. You will always be part of the Newborough family. Keep in touch and know you will be warmly welcomed back as a visitor to our school.

I wish everyone a very safe, enjoyable and Merry Christmas, New Year and holiday break.

School Reopens in 2023

Office staff and Administration commence on Friday 27th January 2023 at 9:00am the day after the Australia Day Public holiday on Thursday 26th January. Teachers resume on Monday 30th January. Class lists will be posted on classroom doors on Monday 30th January to coincide with Booklist and Second Hand Uniform Shop. These will be open from 9:00 – 11:00am.

Queens Jubilee Tree Planting Opening

Last Friday the 9th of December the school had a special afternoon assembly to recognise Queen Elizabeth’s Jubilee and the Federal Government grant honouring this special occasion. We were fortunate to obtain an $8 000 grant that allowed us to plant 60 local Banksias with each of our 15 classes planting four trees each. There are 30 Banksia attenuatta (Candlestick) and 30 Banksia Menziessi (Firewood) that will each grow to about two metres tall. These have been mulched, reticulated, fertilized enclosed with strong tree guards with the ground soundly prepared. Tree Planting Day occurred back on 19th of August coinciding with National Tree Planting Day and the most optimal time to plant during the Noongar season of Djilba when the ground is moist and followed by regular rainfall. Now in Birak and heading into Bunnuru, the hottest part of the year, the young trees are growing vigorously and look very healthy.

All classes from Pre-primary to year six attended the opening that included songs by the choir ‘Walk Together’ and the ‘Tree Song’. We were joined by special guests Ms. Felicity Mitchell representing Ms. Kate Chaney the Federal Member for Curtin, Mr. Stuart Aubrey, MLA Member for Scarborough; Mr. Steve Watson, Director of Education; Councillor Karlo Perkov, City of Stirling and Mr. Simon Zuvich, from the Aboriginal Teaching and Learning Unit. Simon assisted with an Acknowledgement of Country and engaged the audience in an entertaining and engaging talk about the importance of budjar (country), warnt (trees) and coolangar play. He had everyone looking and thinking about the birds that will frequent the banksias and Nature Playground. This was followed with special guests and the Newbie Knights unveiling the Queens Jubilee Plaque.

Thank you to Mr. Richard Goodwin who took the excellent photos.

Newbro Dads

BIG CAMP OUT

The Newbro Dads main event was a hit with over 300 people attending the BIG CAMP OUT on Saturday 3rd December. Wow it’s hard to even remember what happened… soooo much. The first thing to get straight is the Dads thrashed the kids in the tug of war. We toyed with them for a bit, their hopes gradually climbing, the grins on their faces grew, they sniffed victory, then BAM their joy was snuffed out and replaced with our joy. It may seem like an unfair, almost hollow victory but we Dads need a win every now and then… job done.

There was cricket, soccer, dodge ball, corn hole, games on the quad, running on the verandah…. oops not really, no running on the verandah… honest your honour!! A POLICE CAR !!!!! Yes a real life police car turned up, with lights and sirens and it wasn’t even here about the canteen…. nothing to see here, move on …. The kids loved the Police Car, so cool!! Bet the local residents weren’t impressed with the sirens, nahh it’s Doubleview we get them all the time, just depends what end of the street you’re at…. really?, no just jokes…6018 rocks!

All the kids seemed to love the sausage sizzle, juice box style dinner with ice cream chaser and a flambé marshmallow. Best bit was they all kept it down this year, phew!

The camp fire and marshmallow toasting was good, must admit, it is my favourite! We had plenty of kids say it was their first time roasting a marshmallow over an open fire. Such a simple camping pleasure, a memory to cherish. Then like magic all the kids disappeared!!!!!

Where did they all go? Hey it was great around the camp fire, no kids, few sneaky marshmallows, coupla tins, good conversation… well it could have been if we could hear ourselves over the MOVIE!!! Yes the huge screen was a hit, as usual, and even some of the big kids hadn’t seen the movie, yeah really!!

It was super comfy camping weather, nice temperature, no unusual gale force winds, apart from the normal sea breeze of course. There was at least one tent that went rolling across the lawn early in the evening, not mentioning any names of course. So please remember that any tent peg not star picket like in stature, just doesn’t cut the mustard here in WA.

So a big thank you to all the Dads that helped organise the camp out. I know it took a few pub themed meetings to get it sorted, we appreciate your commitment to the cause. A huge shout out to the Mums who came along to the camp out, great to see you all here camping with your kids.

What a year, well done all. See you again in 2023.
