Update from Principal
Dear Families
It’s been a busy few weeks! First, our Faction Carnival on Friday, September 9th, was a great success. We were fortunate with the weather, and the students’ behaviour was exemplary. While there were some issues with the scoring system that led to disappointment, overall, the event was a success. We’ve received valuable feedback through the P&C and the School Board, which we will consider when planning the 2025 carnival. In the meantime, let’s all thank Miss Tench for her hard work in organizing the event. The Year 5 cake stall was a major hit, and the sausage sizzle was also a big success. A special thanks to the parents who helped on the day and to the P&C for arranging the delicious sausage sizzle.
Last week, we celebrated Science Week, and a huge thank you goes to Mrs. Metcalf for making it interactive and exciting. We also appreciate all the staff, students, and families who participated, dressed up, and put thought into their costumes. It was wonderful to see families engaging in the Science lessons and learning alongside their children.
Voluntary Contributions 2024
Thank you to the families who have paid their voluntary contributions for 2024 – while contributions are voluntary, the quality of our teaching and learning programs are directly enhanced by your contribution, which is used to supplement consumables and resources in all curriculum areas. Your contributions help the school replace old classroom resources and provide better learning experiences for your children.
In collaboration with the School Board, we’ve been exploring new methods for the school to communicate with families and share regular updates and positive news. We’re excited to trial a private, closed Facebook Group exclusively for current staff, parents, and carers of current students. This group will not be open to extended family members (unless they are legal guardians) or former staff and students. Participation in the group is voluntary.
Please click on the link below which will take you to the group and click on “join group”.
OSHC Update
As previously advised, we asked for Expressions of Interest for tenders for our Out of School Hours Care provider. Due to circumstances beyond our control, we have decided to decline all offers at this point in time and can advise that Mulberry Tree will enter a new 12-month licence agreement commencing on 5 February 2025 and expire on 30 January 2026. We will run a new Expression of Interest tender process in Term 3 next year which will be an open process for any OSHC Provider to submit an Expression of Interest. The successful OSHC provider will commence their contract in February 2026.
Canteen Update
The P&C and I have been working diligently to set up a food delivery service for the school, and I'm excited to announce that we have partnered with Canteen Kings, who will prepare the meals at Churchlands SHS. It's wonderful to see that so many parents have already signed up to assist with lunch distribution for the rest of the year. I've sent the room information to Canteen Kings, and they will now create an account for our school through Flexischools. Once details on how to set up an account for your child or children are available, I will inform all families. We aim to start this service on Tuesday 3 September.
Student Mobile Phones in Public Schools Policy
We have noticed that a number of students are bringing their mobile phones to school and wearing smart watches. Please be aware under the DOE WA Student Mobile Phones in Public Schools Policy Version 2.0 6 December 2023, the Department of Education does not permit student use of mobile phones in public schools unless for medical or teacher directed educational purpose. As Principal I must, implement a ban on the use of mobile phones for all students from the time they arrive to the conclusion of the school day (“off and away all day”) unless the student has been granted an exemption. Students from Kindergarten to Year 6 are not permitted to have mobile phones in their possession during the school day. For the purposes of this policy, ‘mobile phones’ includes smart watches, other electronic communication devices, and associated listening accessories, such as, but not limited to, headphones and ear buds. In line with this policy, we ask that students hand their mobile phones and/or smart watches to their teacher in the morning so they cannot be accessed during the school day. If you need to contact your child during the school day you may do so via calling the front office on 08 9278 0450. Thank you for your cooperation.
Kind regards,
Denise Jeffs
Year 5/6 Enterprise Fete and Free Dress Day
You may have heard from your children or have seen it in the school calendar that our ‘Year 5/6 Enterprise Fete and Free Dress Day’ is fast approaching.
As part of our Year 5 & 6 ‘Economics and Business’ curriculum, our students will be operating stalls at our fete to be held on Tuesday 10th September in Week 9. This day will also be a Free Dress Day for all students with a gold coin donation.
While students will be visiting the fete during class time, they are welcome to stay after school with parent supervision. We are asking that parents and community members come through the gates to join us from 2:00pm until close at 2:30pm.
The fete has been a huge success in previous years, with profits subsidising the costs of the graduation events for both year groups. It is very exciting and motivating for our students, and we look forward to having the school community visit us on the day. We are asking our community to raid piggy banks, their parent’s coin stash, do odd jobs and whatever else they can to bring as many coins as possible to spend at our stalls. Unfortunately we have a limited ability to provide change for notes, so we suggest changing these for coins at your local supermarket or car wash if possible.
We look forward to seeing you there!

Science Week
To our wonderful Newborough community,
Thank you all so much for supporting our National Science Week celebrations.
It has been such a satisfying and fun week for me, personally, and I have had lots of lovely feedback from staff, students, and parents alike. Thank you, it is very much appreciated.
Thank you to Ms Maribel Ward and Ms Karen Tucknott for your help with planning, and preparations, prior to the week. Thank you very much to Ms Tucknott, Ms Jeffs, Mrs Andria Snelson, for your help supervising and supporting me with our parades. Thank you also to Mr Pemberton and the Year 6 students for helping to pack up on the Wednesday.
Thank you to my fantastic Science Leaders, Yuqi and Eamon, who helped with promoting Science Week and compering the Wednesday parade. You did an amazing job supporting our Science program, as always!
Thank you to all our students, parents and staff who planned for and participated in our fantastic Dress-up Parades. The thought and effort into ideating, making, or purchasing costumes was incredible. Well done and thanks for making our week extra special.
To all the parents and family members that participated in the open lab sessions, it was terrific to have you there. Thank you so much for helping support the other children, as well as your own, with their activities, and for your ongoing support of our Newborough Primary Science program.
I look forward very much to our next Science Week celebration in 2026!
Warmest wishes,
Sam Metcalf – Science Teacher 😊
Looking forward to seeing you in the lab!
Warm regards,

Farewell Del
